A great wedding invitation or save-the-date can truly set the tone for your special day. For those of you looking to plan an eco-friendly wedding, why not start things off on the right foot with eco-friendly wedding stationery! According to 365 Ways to Save the Earth and The Knot, “Every ton of recycled paper saves 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, the energy equivalent of 380 gallons of oil, and keeps almost 60 pounds of pollutants out of the atmosphere.”
We’ve got some great ideas to help you make more eco-conscious decisions when choosing your wedding paper, so you can save trees and our planet on your special day!
We’re kicking off this list of eco-friendly wedding stationery ideas with the most obvious tip of all, going digital. By choosing to go the paperless route, you’ll eliminate all of the paper used for invites, save the dates, stamps, envelopes, shipping, and more! Going digital can also save you a pretty penny, as the average couple spends $440 on wedding invitations.
If you don’t want to go 100% paperless, consider going digital for just save-the-dates, invites, or RSVPs. You can also create a more limited run of physical invites to serve as a memento, or to send to guests that may not be as tech-savvy!
If going completely digital isn’t quite your style, don’t worry, these next tips will help you make some great eco-friendly choices while selecting the wedding stationery of your dreams!
2. Search for an eco-friendly wedding stationery expert
A simple way to streamline your eco-friendly wedding stationery selection is to search for an excellent eco-conscious stationer. Vendors who are already sustainably-minded are well aware of the best industry trends for eliminating waste, and can help you quickly and easily select the best eco-friendly wedding stationery. The best eco-friendly stationers will also try to eliminate waste in their business practices. Supporting eco-friendly small businesses is a great way to use your $$$ to shift the wedding industry in a more environmental direction!
3. Limit your mailings
Between bridal showers, bachelorette and bachelor parties, save-the-dates, and invitations, there are plenty of occasions to send wedding-related materials to your guests. Go digital for as many of these occasions as possible. You can also have your guests RSVP digitally, or at least give them the option to.
Another fun idea? See how many invites you can deliver in person! While this may be impossible for out-of-state guests or a large wedding, personally delivering invites to those nearest and dearest to you is a great way to save on postage-related emissions and even envelopes. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to catch up with friends and talk all about your wedding!
Minimalist save-the-dates and wedding invites aren’t just a great trend, they are also good for the planet! The less paper you use for envelopes and invites, the more trees you’ll save. Carefully consider each piece of paper, string, insert, and envelope you use, and eliminate any extras that seem unnecessary. Hiring a great stationery designer can help your invites stand out and make a big impact, without having a big (negative) impact on our environment!
Did you know that recycled paper is often bleached and processed with harmful chemicals? A great way to ensure the paper you are using is less harmful to our planet is by sourcing 100% post-consumer paper. This is the most eco-friendly option when it comes to wedding stationery, as it is completely made from recycled paper, and should come in an unbleached natural tone. We love the look of these invites!
6. Consider using plantable seed paper
One of our favorite eco-friendly wedding stationery options is plantable seed paper. These biodegradable paper products are a great way to give your guests the gift of flowers while also spreading the news about your special day!
We’re especially partial to this because we love flowers…we’re actually a nonprofit that repurposes and donates wedding flowers to those in need!Learn more here.
7. If you must go new…
If the look you are going for can only be achieved with new paper, consider using natural, organic paper options. You can also purchase FSC® ( Forest Stewardship Council) certified paper, as this paper is certified as responsibly harvested and produced. Another idea is purchasing paper from brands that give back, or even offset their carbon! Not sure where to start? Check out some of these eco-friendly stationery brands!
Not so fun fact: most traditional inks are petroleum-based and release volatile organic compounds (VOCs). To help eliminate the use of these environmentally-harmful printing materials, have your stationery printed with soy or vegetable ink, and look for low (or zero) VOCs levels. Soy or vegetable-based inks are often better quality, meaning that any keepsake invitations you save will look beautiful for years to come.
Eliminate the need for wasteful inks and mailing labels by searching for a local calligrapher to address your envelopes, or even create hand-written invitations if you have the budget. This will add a special touch to your invites and is a great way to support a local business near you!
